A longtime COUNTERfit team member and community advocate, leading with curiosity, compassion, and a deep belief in people
What does COUNTERfit offer today, and how has it evolved?
COUNTERfit is a community-based program that offers outreach, education, and harm reduction services for people who use drugs. It began in 1998 as a small, fixed-site program. Today, it has grown to include a mobile outreach program and an outreach clinic — meeting people where they are. Its evolution has always been guided by the community. We listen, we adapt, and we continue to grow alongside the people we serve.
What inspires you to keep showing up?
When I first started, I had a lot to learn, and a lot of assumptions to unlearn. Our clients have been my greatest teachers. They’ve changed how I see this work and the world around me. I come in each day with a strong sense of purpose and pride.
There’s always something new to learn — new approaches, new challenges, new ways to care for each other. That constant learning, and the relationships we build with clients, each other, and our partners, keep me inspired.
How has your role changed over the past decade?
My role has expanded in many ways. As one of the longest-serving staff members, I’ve had the opportunity to grow alongside the organization. Internally, I support clients while also helping shape our work — such as leading the men’s group and contributing to committees focused on inclusion, diversity, access, and anti-racism, plus occupational health and safety. Externally, I stay closely connected to the community — often in my own time — supporting people who are unhoused or facing barriers to care. I also collaborate with partners across the city and beyond, sharing knowledge and learning from others. I see myself as a bridge, helping ideas and care move where they’re needed most.
What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built, with clients and colleagues alike. Creating the men’s group is especially meaningful; it’s been embraced and continues to grow. I’ve also contributed ideas that have led to real changes in how we work. I’m always thinking about how we can do better, together. For me, that’s what Dreaming Forward is all about.
