Matthew Cheng (he/him) is a second-generation Hong Kong Canadian. He has lived in East Toronto for over 20 years and is passionate about health equity, access to justice, and community well-being.
Matthew holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Kinesiology & Health Science from York University, where he focused on the social determinants of health. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Windsor Faculty of Law where he participated in the inaugural year of the Windsor Law Health Justice Clinic in Mental Health & Addictions, interned at the HIV Legal Network and volunteered at the trans ID clinic.
Following law school, Matthew completed his articles at Pooran Law, focusing on disability rights. He has since worked as a lawyer and housing rights educator with a leading national non-profit organization working to advance the right to housing. He has returned to the Windsor Law Health Justice Clinic in Mental Health & Addictions, now working as a Supervising Lawyer. Matthew is also a member of the Research Ethics Board at Michael Garron Hospital.
Matthew believes health is shaped not only by medical care, but also by housing, income, and access to justice. He is proud to support SRCHC’s work in building healthier and more equitable communities.
Outside of work, Matthew enjoys exploring Toronto’s food scene and spending time with friends and family.
