Healthy Kids Community Challenge (HKCC), Danforth East-York

The Healthy Kids Community Challenge (HKCC) aims to help children grow up healthy, happy and ready to succeed in life by supporting parents and children in following the daily health recommendations for kids 0 – 12 years of age. Through the HKCC, community organizations and multi-sector partners are coming together to expand, connect and build upon existing programs, making resources more accessible to all people in the community.

Danforth-East York is one of 45 communities across Ontario participating in the challenge, which is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Every nine months, a new health theme is announced as a rallying point for programs and services. The current theme of ‘Water does Wonders’ focuses on the benefits of water consumption over sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB’s). SSB’s like juice and pop are a serious concern for kid’s health as they replace more nutritious choices and are a major contributor to childhood obesity.

South Riverdale Community Health Centre is the lead agency managing the HKCC in Danforth-East York, joined by a consortium of organizations including East End Community Health Centre, Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre, East York East Toronto Family Resources, Flemingdon Health Centre, Massey Centre, Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office and WoodGreen Community Services.
