Chinese Programs

The South Riverdale Community Health Centre offers a wide variety of health promotion programs and services in Mandarin and Cantonese. For more information, click on the programs listed below to contact a Chinese-speaking staff member.

Available Programs:

Building Breast Healthy Neighbourhoods (BBHN) Women find support and learn about risk factors, screening and treatment options for breast cancer. Women may also become Breast Health Champions, volunteering a few hours a month to raise awareness and teach others about early detection. Free training, information materials and on-going mentorship will be provided.
One-to-one support and help for women who are having difficulties breastfeeding. Common issues include: not enough (or too much) milk knowing when baby has had enough baby has trouble latching on breasts leaking pumping milk sore nipples
An educational program that offers guidance and mutual support to Chinese cancer patients and their families. The group is led by a Chinese-speaking outreach worker. Health professionals such as doctors, cancer nurses, pharmacists, radiation therapists, dietitians and social workers are invited to make presentations and answer questions.
Diabetes classes led by a Chinese-speaking registered dietitian. Learn how to feel better and avoid unnecessary risks through healthy eating. Families and caregivers are welcome. 7 sessions (2 ½ hours each).
Chinese women meet each other, listen to presentations and join in different activities. TTC, childcare and snacks may be provided. Topics include healthy eating self care law (family, tenant, employment) physical activity health issues
Led by a community nutrition assistant, Chinese mothers and caregivers share information and tips about healthy eating and cooking. Guest speakers may include dietitians, nurse practitioners and doctors. Childcare may be provided.
Prepare healthy and delicious meals in our community kitchen with a dietitian and other people living with diabetes. Share recipes and tips and learn more about managing diabetes through healthy eating.
One-to-one counseling for parents and families who would like to talk to a social worker. Short-term only.
Gentle exercise for people with limited physical mobility, and adults over 55. Tai chi strengthens muscles and improves flexibility, as it improves the flow of energy and focuses the mind.
1 ½ hour tour of a grocery store with a registered dietitian. Take an eye-opening tour of a supermarket with a dietitian, and learn about the best food choices for your health and your food dollar. Groups tours (5-12 people) only.
Parents and caregivers meet, take part in discussions and enjoy activities with their children. All groups are led by a health promoter, with social workers, dietitians and nurses presenting information and answering questions. 8 sessions, 2 ½ hours each. Each session includes a 30-minute discussion, as well as time to share information.
Ask questions, share concerns and learn about breastfeeding in a 2-hour workshop for expectant mothers. The group is led by a certified lactation consultant / primary care nurse practitioner.
